Soldering is a key component in silversmithing and can dramatically expand your jewelry making skills. In this class, you will design a  unique and captivating sterling silver cuff bracelet. You will use your own creativity to make it your design, embellish with a cabochon stone, decorated with wire and add some texture. Participants will use their design skills to make their own, unique decorations.

    Class description:   

    Learning to solder is vital to learning how to connect mental in metalsmithing and silversmithing and in this class you will learn all the tricks of the trade to making beautiful metal jewelry using a torch, and the correct type and amount of solder.

     

    ABOUT YOUR TEACHER:

    Julie began creating jewelry over fifteen years ago. She is talented, creative and qualified to teach just about anything: all types of metal and silversmithing, Precious Metal Clay (PMC), wire works, sheet metals, wire wrapping, fused glass, lampwork glass, wire and beading techniques. She has studied at the prestigious William Holland School of Lapidary Arts, at Rio Grande, and she is a certified PMC artisan. Her work can be seen at Gallery 782 in Biloxi, MS

     

    NOTE:

    Soldering is a metal alloy used to create a strong permanent bond between two metals and flux is used to strengthen and improve its mechanical properties. The soldering process involves heating the surface of the metal to be joined and melting solder which then allowed to cool and solidify, creating a strong and durable joint .

     

    You will Learn:

    We will discuss and use three different types of solder, how to select which solder to use, how to set up your workspace, tools needed when using a torch and other related issues. How to join sterling silver pieces by soldering them together, how to measure, determine the amount of sheet metal needed for the bracelet, texture the metal using texturing hammers, design a wire decoration for the bracelet, solder the wire and cabochon bezel onto the bracelet, use a bracelet mandrel to form the bracelet, secure a cabochon in the bezel, when to quinch, pickle, file and finishing skills. You will also learn safety issues.

     

    Skills Covered:

    Design techniques, how to measure and size your bracelet, Measure wire and sheet metal, determine size and amount of sheet metal and wire needed, texture using texture hammers, make your design wire to embellish, solder wire and bezel, use bracelet mandrel, secure cabochon in the bezel, cut and bend wire, clean metal and wire, what gauge and style wire to use, soldering, use of flux, type of solder to use (hard, medium, or easy), using a torch, file, annealing, pickling, cleaning wire, how to size cuff to fit your wrist, and patina if so desired, polish, finishing techniques, how to use a torch safely and best place to buy wire, sheet metal, and supplies.

     

    Kit to Include:  

    Everything need to complete this prject.

     

    Skill Level: 

    No experience necessary.

    Tools to Bring:  

    None, You will use studio tools.

     

    What to Wear:

    Comfortable clothes and closed toe shoes (you will be using a torch).  Apron, latex gloves, safety glasses and mask will be provided if needed.
