Knowing how to solder can dramatically expand your jewelry making skills, but many people are a little leery of using a torch. Julie will give you the choice of making a pair of earrings or the Foxie ring. You will learn how to join sterling silver pieces by soldering the metals together. We will discuss the different types of solder, how to select which solder to use, safety issues to consider, how to set up your workspace, tools needed when using a torch and other related issues.

Soldering is a technique used in making and repairing jewelry where two pieces of metal (in this class sterling silver) are joined using heat and by adding a lower melting metal called solder. The solder is used to bond the two pieces of metal together. Solder comes in hard, medium, easy and extra easy and it can be purchased in the form of chips, paste, and wire.
You will choose your own design for your earrings or you may choose to make the Foxie ring and Julie will teach you when to use hard, medium, easy and extra easy solder and in each step what works best chips, paste or wire solder. There are several fun soldering steps in this project. The information in this class will be invaluable for advancing your jewelry making skills and you will learn how much fun using a torch can be.
